Rules & Refereeing Clinic with Mark Stasinos (FOC), September 8, 2012

The Oregon Division of USA Fencing presents The Rules & Refereeing Clinic with Mark Stasinos (FOC), who will discuss the fencing rules and how they are interpreted and applied by referees at the national level and beyond. A solid understanding of the rules is essential for all fencers, especially active competitors!

Mr. Stasinos has been involved with fencing for over 40 years in many roles: former USFA Vice President, Pacific Northwest section chair, coach, club owner, referee assigner, national and international referee, and member of the FOC. This clinic will be of great interest to all fencers as well as parents - not just those interested in refereeing. Attendees from outside the Oregon Division are welcome to attend.

The clinic will run from 9AM to 6PM on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at the Northwest Fencing Center in Beaverton, with a break for lunch. Attendance at this clinic fulfills the prerequisites needed for taking the written and practical referee exams. Testing to be a referee is optional, but encouraged. Attendees are encouraged to review the rulebook and study guide, which can be found on http://www.fencingofficials.org. Mr. Stasinos also will be present on Sunday Sept. 9th at the Random Youth Cup three-weapon tournament held at NWFC to evaluate referees who wish to apply their new skills. For more information on this clinic and to pre-register, go to http://askfred.net/Clinics/moreInfo.php?clinic_id=19197.

Zagunis to Be Flag Bearer at Opening Ceremonies

Congratulations to our very own two-time Olympic fencing champion Mariel Zagunis, who was chosen to carry the U.S. flag in the opening ceremony of the London Games. The U.S. Olympic Committee says Zagunis, a Beaverton native, won a vote of the 529-strong team ahead of Friday's ceremony. Zagunis says she is "extremely humbled by this incredible privilege." Mariel was the first American to win a fencing gold in 100 years at the 2004 Athens Games, and she will be going for her third consecutive women's saber gold in London.

2012 Summer Nationals Medalists and Top Fencers

I am sure you are as excited as we are about the upcoming 2012 Olympics, and look forward to our U.S. fencers (including Mariel!) doing great and bringing home the medals!

Before we get to that, we want to take the time to acknowledge the great fencing done by our division fencers at the recent 2012 USFA National Championships & July NAC (finishes can be found at http://usfencingresults.com/jul-sn.
